Institutions

Institutions are established organizations and foundations, dedicated to education (colleges and universities), public service (hospitals and convention centers) or culture (museums). The world’s larger institutions are located in major cities or at an estate near these cities; in either location designed to be easily accessible by car and public transportation, accommodating the large passenger flows typically faced.

Commonly institutions located in city centers are well linked in the public transportation network. The links are a requirement based on their function in society, but also as reduced (public) parking is available. Some institutions even establish their own transit systems (during events) to facilitate the passenger flows to their site. Convention centers are unique in featuring extensive parking locations despite being located in the city center.

All institutions with extensive parking facilities, such as convention centers, know that as the size of these parkings increases, so does the need for a convenient link to the building entrance(s). Automated vehicles can provide an efficient connection from any location at the parking facilities to the main entrance(s).

Institutions at the periphery often relocated from the city center to facilitate growth. Generally the service level by public transportation is lower, but compensated by an improved car-accessibility. These institutions may also feature campus (-like) environments with multiple buildings (having different functions). The university campuses are the best known example, but some hospitals also feature campus-environments. Institutions featuring a campus could have multiple decentralized parking locations instead of one large parking facility.

In a campus (-like) environment an (electronically guided) automated people mover system can also facilitate the travel between the different locations on site. E.g. in the case of a university it can interconnect the dormitory complex, the colleges, the library, sports arenas and other facilities; eliminating the need for ever using the car for transport on campus. In a hospital environment it has additional benefits as it facilitates the transportation of less able-bodied people and provides a more appropriate environment.
