PRT Comparison

Personal Rapid Transit is a new, sustainable transportation concept that has similarities with existing transportation systems, but also distinguishes itself from them by other features.

Although there are significant similarities with automobiles, Personal Rapid Transit is a form of public transportation (in most applications). PRT combines the desirable aspects of the private car (private travel at any desired time) with the social advantages of public transport (no congestion and parking issues). By automated operations PRT distinguishes itself from the car and public transportation.

Personal Rapid Transit system is especially suited as a local transit system, connecting multiple locations amongst each other (network configuration). A Personal Rapid Transit system can relieve congestion (locally). To which degree depends on the displacement patterns of the (potential) passengers. If PRT is the only mode of transportation required from origin to destination, it will be (nearly) impossible to beat (with any other mode of transportation). If the PRT system is one of the links in the (public) transportation chain, it will depend on the strength of the other links whether or not it becomes attractive to use – as a chain is always as strong (or attractive) as its’ weakest link.
