Although new towns supposed to be self sustaining, they often have a strong link with a ‘mother’-city – as evidenced by the transit infrastructure. A Personal Rapid Transit system could connect the main town facilities (retail, public services, etc.) and reduce the car-dependency of the residents.
PRT is a light transportation system with a simple infrastructure and small foot print. It can be integrated within (existing) spatial planning, either at grade when possible or elevated when necessary. The electric or hybrid drive system of the vehicles fits well with the green and open spaces of New Towns.
The (loop) network typology ensures all major facilities (such as schools, libraries, retail areas and other facilities) are interconnected. Direct trips to the major facilities ensure the system is attractive to use and a valid alternative to the car. Additionally the PRT system can also connect to the (radial) corridor transit systems linking to the ‘mother’-city, thus improving the transportation chain and making public transportation more attractive.
