Group Rapid Transit (GRT) is an automated transit system with an exclusive right-of-way, providing a shared ride for 6 to 30 passengers per vehicle. A GRT system can operate at intermediate headways and offers a high frequency or transportation on-demand.

2getthere’s GRT system features automated mini-buses (ParkShuttles) and the supervisory system TOMS. The ParkShuttle vehicle accommodates 20 (12 seated, 8 standing) to 25 passengers (8 seated, 17 standing) and allows for easy wheelchair access. The guide way is typically constructed at grade, allowing for at grade crossings.

2getthere’s GRT system features the most advanced network and vehicle controls. 2getthere’s ability to provide the GRT system is based on the well-proven (20+ years) FROG network and vehicle controls, which is fully customized for Automated People Mover requirements. The vehicle is developed in close co-operation with expert 3rd parties.

The ParkShuttle GRT system basically operates as a horizontal elevator. The vehicles will stop at every station selected as a destination and where transport has been requested. As a consequence it will operate as bus service in peak hours and almost as a PRT system in off-peak hours (providing direct origin to destination connections).

Possible applications, whether they require simple connections or networks, range from urban – city centers and residential areas – to campuses, business and industrial parks, leisure (theme parks and resorts) as well as airport applications. A GRT system will typically be installed as a feeder system to a public transit node or a parking facility.

2getthere has realized several GRT applications, installing projects at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and business park Rivium. The latter was upgraded and extended in 2005, with the 2nd generation ParkShuttle GRT vehicle.

2getthere’s Group Rapid Transit system can accommodate up to 8,000 passengers phpd at full capacity. With the theoretical capacity based on a headway of 10 seconds and a vehicle occupancy of 20 passengers, a capacity of 5,000 people per hour is realistically achieved. A system can be economically viable from 1,500 pax/day.

The 2nd generation GRT system is operational at business park Rivium in the Netherlands, with the 3rd generation development in progress. The GRT system can provide direct origin-to-destination travel and will typically operate on schedule to optimize capacity. In off-peak hours on-demand operations can be facilitated.

Depending on the intensity of traffic, stations can be created off-line. Stations will typically feature paralel berths. 2getthere’s vehicles use a simple asphalt infrastructure, with small passive magnets added every 2 meters to allow for automated driving.
